The work of redistricting continues to face new challenges in Virginia. Firstly, the delays in the delivery of census data have nearly confirmed that maps will not be drawn in time for November elections. Secondly, the potential passing of HR 1 by Congress could create significant reforms that would impact redistricting work across the country, including in Virginia. In its current iteration, the bill dictates uniform redistricting criteria and commission creation. This nation-wide standard would create the unique scenario in which Virginia would need to determine how to somehow contend with its current commission and the hypothetical expectations brought by HR1. The Senate Rules Committee will vote on HR1 on March 24th.
