Virginia has a long and ugly history of voter disenfranchisement and suppression. In the past, tactics like poll taxes and literacy tests kept Black voters from casting ballots; today, we see measures like voter ID laws, voting rights stripped from returning citizens, malfunctioning and insecure voting machines, and long lines.
The Virginia Civic Engagement Table works year-round to ensure Virginians have unencumbered access to the ballot and can cast their votes without confusion or intimidation. Through a robust Election Protection program that focuses on day-of rapid response efforts to mitigate issues at polling locations, working with local election administrators to troubleshoot anticipated issues ahead of Election Day, poll monitoring and voter assistance, as well as strategic legislative advocacy, we work to protect voting rights and win increased access for Virginia voters. We do this work in close partnership with community members and state and national organizations.
