Kenny A. Boddye

What is your work focused on?
Improving the lives of people in Prince William County and Virginia!

How long have you been doing this work? And what motivated you to do this work?
I’ve been in the work for 5 years.

What is your theme song?

If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would it be and why?
Thurgood Marshall during his heyday – having the opportunity, skill, and network necessary to save lives and redefine our country’s criminal justice system is something I would love to experience at least once.

What is the most exciting thing you have worked on or work you are most proud of?
Passing our first budget together as a Board of Supervisors. It may not sound exciting, but the first draft of our budget was presented to us on my birthday this year – on February 18th. Since it was before the onset of COVID-19, it encompassed the hopes and ambitions of a progressive agenda made possible by a newly-elected Democratic Majority and the platform of our school board.

Although the fiscal realities of COVID-19 forced us to step away from large swaths of our budget, we still increased investment in our school system by $17 Million, made deep investments in human services (including substance abuse, peer networking, mental health services, and intellectual disabilities services), made permanent a program which pairs police officers with therapists when responding to mental health calls, initiated the creation of a Child Advocacy Center, and restarted an Intensive In-Home Program for families of children dealing with severe mental health challenges. We did all this by keeping the tax rate the same as last year.

Our budget is a statement of our priorities and our values as a community, and even when dealing with a pandemic and recession, we were able to lean into our values and invest in initiatives that invest in the future of people.
